Abroad the Broads

September Club Run

Pete, Bev and myself arrived at Beccles Quay by car, to be joined by Mark Howlett who had cycled up from Wickham Market, taking advantage of the rising brisk SW wind.

Pete had devised a well thought out route he and Bev had done on a few occasions before, and it also became apparent that the Broads form an important part of the Whelan nostalgic past, as we heard stories of happy family holidays afloat the many waterways.

We headed north from Beccles and were soon beckoning the ferryman at Reedham. The clouds were clearing, the temperature was rising and it was looking very promising.

We were soon over the River Yare and heading North through Acle and on to Ranworth Broad for late elevenses.

It was now apparent that we were in for a glorious late summer day, as the long sleeves were removed and the sun cream was applied.

We wound through leafy lanes; “these Norfolk lanes recall lost innocence”, wrote Sir John Betjeman, as my own memories of childhood Norfolk holidays came flooding back, as we travelled through Woodbastwick (home to Woodfordes brewery) to Wroxham. We cross the river Bure, “the lap, lap lapping of the weedy Bure” wrote JB. Or as Pete put it we are now cycling through “Roys-ville”..! Continuing north and over to Neatishead for lunch. It seemed that while we were in the White Horse, some one had turned up the heat, as we emerged from the dark, pub interior into bright sun, clear blue skies and a very hot afternoon. Pete’s route took us through Horning, over the River Ant at Ludham and Potter Heigham over the River Thurne and out on to some really exposed roads where we battled into the rough wind, some times struggling to stay up right. Back through Acle, ice cream at Reedham village and a top up of water bottles from the hose-pipes for the boats and back across the ferry, before dropping back to Beccles and the chaos of people leaving the annual duck-race.

A full and glorious day out, 63miles covered, and still Mark hadn’t had enough as he bade farewell and headed off into the headwind to cycle the 30miles back to Wickham Market.

Thanks to Pete for organising the ride and for letting me indulge myself in penning this piece.

October Club run

The October club run will be the Suffolk CTC Rough Stuff event on 15th October, starting and finishing at Butley Village Hall.  Entry fee £2.  Certificate for all finishers.

The route is 25 miles, with an optional extra 5 mile section this year.  Start time will be 9:30, but riders should arrive with plenty of time to register (9am).

Whilst the event is not a race, we can't stop riders going as hard as they want to beat a previous time.  Remember the course rides better the wetter it is, so no namby-pamby excuses for not riding it because it was raining.

PCC Grass track

Unfortunately Pete had to cancel the grass track event one week before hand as there were only 6 entries.  As it happens, it would have been cancelled on the day due to torrential rain.  Pete is hoping for more entries next year, and to be able to use a larger track.

Next year’s event will be held on 11th August.

Road Race Champs

Hopefully Matt will produce a write up of the race on his return from Italy.

Evening 10s

10th August

The peak of the holiday season saw the smallest field of the year. In a battle between visitors, Phil Hetzel prevailed easily with a good 23:40, preceding Paul Clarke, Angus Jardine and John Vidler.  None of the riders used time trial bikes.

24th August

After very heavy rain all afternoon and puddles across the course in several places, it wasn't looking too promising for the last event of the season. However, by start time the rain had gone, the wind had dropped, the puddles weren't so bad and a small field had braved it to the start - although two Rons decided to give it a miss and go to the pub instead!

Thanks to Valerio for producing the results.

Thanks to Pete and Bev, Plomesgate CC now has a flashy new banner for use at club events or promotions.  See it on display at the next club Open event (or maybe the dinner?).

Club Dinner

This year’s club dinner will be held at the Lighthouse in Aldeburgh again, but this year the aim is for you to confirm numbers before the end of October so that I can ensure we get all of the upstairs, if enough people want to attend.  The dinner will be on Saturday 2nd December, and members are welcome to attend and bring a guest.  Please send me an e-mail if you want to attend to broughton.m@btopenworld.com or ring me on 01728 452143.

Cyclo Cross 1

Now the evening 10's are over, the Cyclo Cross league has started.  The next event is Sunday 17th September at Sible Hedingham, Essex.  The next event after that will be the XRT-Elmy Cycles event on 1st October in Chantry Park, Ipswich.

Details can be found at http://easterncross.users.btopenworld.com

You don't have to join the league or have a BCF licence (only about £3 extra without) and you can ride mountain bikes - so hope to see you riding some of the events.

If you've got any questions feel free to contact me.
