PLOMESGATE CYCLING CLUB

November 2003

October Club Run

A handful of Plomesgate members turned up for the CTC Ruff Stuff ride from Bromeswell, including Gary for his first official off-road ride, and Jim I on his new mountain bike.  I don’t think there were any candidates for the Adbu award this time!

Le Tour Review

LE TOUR : A History of the Tour de France

Geoffrey Wheatcroft (2003) Simon & Schuster, London. Pp 378, Price: £16.99

Yet another book about the Tour de France!  The difference is that this is written by a man who is a writer –a journalist and historian – as well as having a passion for Le Tour.

Geoffrey Wheatcroft takes you through the history of the Tour from its improbable conception in 1903 up to last year’s race (2002).

You are introduced to the great characters of the race itself throughout the century, with attention to the scandals and internal politics in this huge and magnificent enterprise.

More than this however, Wheatcroft paints a cultural picture of France, illustrating how the Tour fits into its political, social and cultural context – particularly how it survived through two world wars.

There are wonderful gems from literature and history; things that had me turning the corners of the pages so as not to lose them. Alongside this he brings to life France’s regions and regional characters as well as providing a gastronomic tour.

Sometimes I felt he was too knowledgeable and too clever – I needed an English dictionary occasionally – but the depth of this book and the insights to be gained from it, made it a really worthwhile and fascinating read.

CTT Update

Things of note from the CTT meetingwere that East DC will be running the National 100 next year after South DC threw in the towel.

The District are still without a Treasurer after Mandy Cook stood down.  It isn't a big job, Mandy reckons about an hour a week, but she says that you need to keep on top of things or like her it can get a bit much if you fall behind. Any volunteers ?

Bob Hayward wants to know what clubs and their members want along the lines of training/coaching days, talks, lectures etc..... West Suffolk Wheelers asked if a track/grass track training day could be arranged, seconded by myself. John Tovell of Wolsey suggested a series of testing days so riders could track their progress over a period of time such as during the winter.

If anyone fancies some coaching/education on time trialling or road racing or cyclo cross or MTBing or track or whatever then let me know or contact Bob directly with your ideas.

Diet time?

I borrowed Becky's bike and having got use to V brakes I hurtled down a slope and realised her cross brakes aren't as good and I wasn't going to stop so rode into a tree which I managed to knock over. I didn't think I'd put that much weight on! Got a round of applause and much laughter while Alan Watts had to remove the offending tree from the track...!!
