PLOMESGATE CYCLING CLUB
November/December 2002
Merry Christmas, everyone!
A small turnout for this one, as Steve J & Rob C joined Team Figgitt in Framlingham for a gentle tour of the Suffolk lanes. After winding our way around for a couple of hours, we witnessed Becky's prowess at changing inner tubes after she punctured, then headed for a new (to us) coffee and cake stop at the cafe on the A12 near Marlesford/Campsea Ashe (just after the end of the B10/36R dual carriageway) where we met up with Paul Willsher, who'd made his own way over there. [ Cafe report: good coffee, hot chocolate and cakes, but a bit pricey. ] Leaving the cafe, we said good-bye to Paul who had to head back, then crossed the A12 and headed back to Fram, via Marlesford and Parham.
Steve
Meet at Mark and Viv’s house (185 Saxmundham Road, Aldeburgh) at 10am on Sunday 1st December for a road ride in glorious sunshine (we hope!!). The plan is to ride for about an hour and a half, stop at a café, then ride back for a light lunch of soup and sandwiches at the Broughtons. All are welcome.
Reserve 5th January in your diaries for the first club run of the New Year. This will be a road ride starting from the RSPB reserve car park at Minsmere. The ride will start at 10:30am, last about 2.5 hours, and will be followed by lunch in the café at Minsmere.
Hilary was involved in a car accident recently, and we send the club’s best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Semer Hill Climb, 3rd November
The sun was shining and the course was in surprisingly good condition after the previous weekend's gales and the heavy rains on Saturday evening. Gary Holden got to the top in 1 min 3.9sec while Steve Jones made it in 58.8 sec. Neither was any challenge to the overall, as M. Arnold (APIBikes.com) summitted in less than 50 seconds! K. Richardson (Mildenhall) was East District champion in 54.6, and also led Mildenhall to the team prize.
Colchester Rovers Cyclo Cross - 17th November
Becky Figgitt set up another first for Plomesgate CC when she became our first prize winner in a cyclo cross event. The course at Furze Hill, Mistley is a hard one and Becky found the going very tough at times. She finished second overall and first girl in the Under 16s event to winner Kerrick Newstead of Wolsey RC
Becky's next cross event is the Regional Championships at Thorndon near Eye on December 1st.
Ten people turned up for this on 15th November at the Chalker’s house. The committee has increased by one this year, with Rob Cotton agreeing to join. For those who don’t know, your committee consists of:
Chairman: John
Chalker
Secretary: Trevor Figgitt
Treasurer: Steve Jones
Committee members: Hilary Graham, Mark Broughton, Viv Broughton, Rob Cotton.
The next committee meeting is on Wednesday 15th January at 8pm at the Broughton’s house. Plomesgate CC is a democratically run club, and all members are welcome to attend committee meetings.
Steve Jones is running some training rides from the Ipswich area again this year, most Sunday mornings, starting about 10.00am. There are a variety of routes (i.e. I get lost sometimes...) from 30 to 50 miles, some hilly, some flatter, taking from 2 to 3.5 hours. For more details and to confirm when and where they are contact Steve on 01473 603710 or e-mail: steve@mocol.co.uk
In previous years there were informal training rides each Sunday morning from Somerfield in Saxmundham, with varying levels of attendance. If anyone is interested in resurrecting these, John C has suggested that a better start time would be 11am, either from Somerfields or outside the church at Snape. If anyone is interested send an e-mail to chalky@knod.freeserve.co.uk or ring John on 832404.
Trevor and Becky joined the MTB in the dark ride last week, enjoying the mixed shingle and sand along the dunes from Dunwich.
We meet each Tuesday at Sizewell T 8pm for a ride of about an hour. Good lights an advantage, but not essential – but don’t forget your helmets. There may be rides from Tunstall or Bromeswell – contact Mark or Viv if you are interested.
We’ve booked into the Lighthouse in Aldeburgh for the Plomesgate prize presentation again. It’s on Sunday 16th February 2003 at 8pm, with those who are interested meeting for drinks in the Cross Keys at 7:30 ish. Please e-mail or ring Viv to confirm you will be attending by Monday 28th January on broughton.m@btopenworld.com or 01728 452143.
