PLOMESGATE CYCLING CLUB
March
2003
Feb Club Run
It was good to see Jon Smith on a club run again, as nine of us set out from Framlingham in fair weather. Much entertainment was had boxing Becky in on the sprints – did you think it was accidental, Becky? After coffee at Stonham Barns, potential member Mark Howlett from Wickham Market treated us to a fine display coming through a rather slimy ford. He’ll need to pay his subs to be eligible for the Abdu trophy, but it was a worthy attempt. Thanks to Trevor for leading the ride.
Meet at Somerfields car park in Saxmundham at 10am on Sunday 23rd March.
Steve J will be leading this ride from his house in Ipswich at 10:30am on Sunday 13th April. Details of how to get to Steve’s house will be in the next newsletter.
The annual dinner and prize presentation was well attended this year, and the Lighthouse served an excellent meal, as usual.
With the slightly warmer days numbers have increased for the Saturday training rides, with the last two weekends seeing 5 people meeting at Snape Church at 10:30am. This still happens on an informal basis, so there is no guarantee that anyone else will be there.
Have you paid your subs? If not, now is the time to write the cheque for £10, payable to Plomesgate CC and send it to Trevor Figgitt at 15 Surrey Close, Framlingham.
Our first open event of the year is on Saturday 22nd March, with Hilary organizing it as usual. Please either e-mail Hil with your offers to help on hilaryhg@aol.com, or ring him on 01728 602563. All offers will be gratefully received.
1st March, CC Breckland 10
Pete Whelan had a good ride in his first TT of the season, and writes:
A cool day, with the forecast of thundery showers, turned out to be brighter than expected though a bit cool. A few people braved shorts, but most rode with protected knees. The course is a bit of a 'farmyard' start, with plenty of dried mud, gravel and a rough surface, also not helped by a headwind for the first leg. After the first section, the road surface improved slightly, the wind was a bit more favourable and I got into the rhythm of the first TT of the season a bit better. Being my normal pessimistic self at this time of the year I was going to be happy to get under 30m, or at least go faster than Andrew (course record is only 23m00s). The third leg was a flyer, averaging 28mph, and passing a few people and getting closer to my minute man, who I hadn't lost sight of from the start of the second leg. The final leg from Hingham to Scoulton seemed to last forever, but I closed even more on my minute man to be within 3s of catching him, to finish in 25m39s; with a few scalps claimed. Jim Burgess won it on 23m03s, who would normally do a 20m ride on the Bungay or A14 courses.
This is a summary of the club competitions.

Abdu Award
This will be awarded to the member who in the opinion of the committee has performed in a manner befitting of Djamodoline Abduzhaparov (the sprinter who made an acrobatic exit from the Tour de France on the final sprint along the Champs Elysees in 1989???) whilst cycling.
