PLOMESGATE CYCLING CLUB ![]()
February club run
The Plomesgate club run was a good one on Sunday with 5 people out on a 35 mile/2.5 hr gentle jaunt through the Suffolk and Essex countryside, although PCC were outnumbered by IBC three to two... Gary and I were there, as was Kirsty, who brought Angus along for his first outdoor miles since before Christmas, and we met Stuart (?) along the way.

Date: 24th March
Start : 10:00am at Elms Car Park, Framlingham (free car parking). Come into
Framlingham along B1116 towards Dennington, cross zebra crossing, at mini roundabout
take second exit and turn immediately left into New Road. There is a bike/motorcycle
shop on your right, the car park is on the right behind this shop and overlooking
the Mere and Castle.
The plan: Ride for 30 miles or so including a stop for coffee either at Debenham or Stonham. Return to Framlingham where refreshments will be available at 15 Surrey Close. The pace will hopefully be relatively gentle as there are bound to be some sore legs following the previous day's time trial exertions.
There have been two of these so far, Mark, Viv & Chalky have gone out for about an hour north from Sizewell on bridleways and back along the beach from Dunwich heath. It's a real hoot and is thoroughly recommended. On the first ride we giggled our way through horrendous weather and suffered from a distinct lack of illumination towards the end as batteries ran down. The weather was much more pleasant for the second ride, but on this occasion Mark managed to break his chain half way down Sizewell beach. The next ride is on Tuesday 12th March, meet at 8pm in the Sizewell 'T' car park.

The BMX Session
On February 17th it was an early start as we had to pick up our new tandem in Sheffield before arriving at Mansfield BMX Track in Warsop just north of Mansfield. Becky was attending the last coaching and assessment day before the final selection was being made for the limited places on the British Cycling Talent Team.
The afternoon started with signing in and introductions before each participant was allocated a full face helmet, gloves and a top of the range Huffy BMX bike. They were given tuition on BMX bikes, and the different types of racing before they were taken through some basic skills tests on the flat. Then it was on to the track for the real stuff. The track is scary from the word go, with the start gate at the top of a 30 foot man made mound with an incline of around 18%! The riders line up on the top balancing on the bike with the front wheel against the gate, the gate is dropped and you hurtle down the steep hill and immediately into some rolling hills. As Becky and her colleagues were novices they were told to slow down after the start to avoid accidents. If you hit a double hill too fast you can end up burying your front wheel in the second bump. There were a few tumbles, Becky included, but nothing too serious and Becky certainly seemed to be getting the hang of it, consistently being first off the blocks. Then in one of the last runs some of the lads got a bit carried away and there was a rather nasty accident which resulted in one of them being airlifted to hospital. A bit of a sad ending to an otherwise enjoyable afternoon.
The Result
Just four days after the BMX session Becky got a phone call from the Talent Team Manager inviting her to join the Talent Team. After attending an induction day in March where she will be measured for clothing and equipment she will have to attend several training camps throughout the year, will be allocated a coach and training plan, will receive a sports lottery grant and will get the opportunity to try out different disciplines under the guidance of British Cycling coaches. She will be retested during the year to assess her development, and will have to meet certain standards in order to stay on the programme. So what does the future hold for a certain member of our humble little Plomesgate CC - Olympic medallist ? We can but dream...
Many thanks to everyone who has offered their support to Becky whilst undergoing these assessments, it is appreciated.
