Plomesgate Cycling Club
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all, and let's hope for some good cycling next season!
November Club run
Steve, Matt D and Mark H turned out in appalling conditions for a hilly ride from Steve’s house in Ipswich.
December Club run
This month’s club run is this Sunday, 14th December, starting at 10am from Somerfield in Saxmundham. Christmas decorations optional!
Winter Training Rides
These Sunday rides have now started, although the weather on the first couple of outings was good enough to make us check the calendar! However, the clock change seems to have coincided with the season change.
These rides are intended to be steady rides at about 16mph average (50 miles in 3 hrs). The aim is to create an aerobic base for the more specific training (in the spring) to build on. As such, you should be riding at a moderately low perceived level of effort - if you can't talk comfortably to the people around you, you're probably going too hard.
If you've got any questions about the rides, or you're not sure whether you'll cope, please contact me.
Steve.
Track Training
Please note that a track training weekend is being organised by Jeff Wade (Chelmer CC). He has now confirmed the booking as follows:-
"I have hired the track at Newport as follows 2-5pm Sat 31st January and 9-12am Sunday 1st Feb. It is possible (at the moment) to extend this till 6pm on the Saturday and to start at 8am on the Sunday, but we would need to get in quick if we want to do this. I anticipate a cost of £20-25, but would hope to reduce this if we get enough people. Bookings will only be accepted with payment, as from previous years I have lost too much money on people who have promised to go, then not turned up on the day. I will work on the basis of two groups, one expert and one novice (the track limit is 15 novices and 25 experts) and I plan to have sessions of 20mins on the Saturday and probably half-hour on the Sunday when the activities will be more complicated. I hope to have someone else to assist me with the coaching so that we have a slick organisation, one group off and the next one on straight away. There are at the moment no facilities for eating at the track, there's vending machines only, but I'm told there's plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby."
Riders from other regions are welcome however preference will be given to Eastern Region riders. If you are interested, please can you let Jeff Wade (chelmercc@aol.com) know asap.
Trevor and Becky are booked on this. Bike ownership is not necessary as according to the attachment bikes can be hired.
Club Dinner
The club dinner and prize presentation was well attended, with 23 people turning up. Fortunately the Lighthouse could cope with the additional two people that Viv hadn’t counted! It was good a see some new names on the trophies again.
Talent Team Update
Becky attended her latest camp in the salubrious setting we all know and love....Ipswich. The first of the two days was cyclo cross skills under the guidance of the normal coaches and Nathan Miller at Foxhall. Day two which was a very wet day was Cycle Speedway at Whitton Sports Centre. Continuing her run of recent bad luck (see cyclo cross reports below) Becky took a nasty fall during the Cycle Speedway, badly banging her knee, which looks like it could jeopardise her starting the National Trophy Cyclo Cross in Ipswich on Sunday Nov 2nd.
Saturday Cyclo Cross Coaching
Nathan Miller runs a Talent Team Academy at Foxhall Stadium 9:00 on a Saturday morning. The sessions involve practising cyclo cross skills, such as dismounting, jumping obstacles, remounting, running up hills carrying bike, descending etc.... Don't be put off by the Talent Team Title, these sessions are attended by a wide range of riders and abilities including myself and Harry. If anyone is interested and would like to speak to Nathan I have his mobile number, otherwise if you have ever wondered about mastering some cyclo cross skills why not pop along.

Lea Valley Cyclo Cross – Eastway
Becky travelled
down the A12 to Eastway at the end of October to have a go at the Lea Valley
Cyclo Cross, if we had known what bad luck was awaiting we would have stayed
in bed. Whilst warming up she broke her chain, fortunately I had the foresight
to take her MTB as back up, so she started the race on that. The cross circuit
uses quite a bit of the road and then dives off across the rough ground in
the middle of the cycle track. Because of the road section despite a fast
start Becky was at a disadvantage on the MTB, so I hurriedly tried to fix
the cross bike, which I managed to do. Becky carried out a brilliant and speedy
bike change (thanks to Nathan's Saturday morning coaching sessions) and off
she went to try and take some places back. However, it was shortly after this
that Becky's race ended when lulled into a false sense of security by her
previous laps on an MTB with V brakes, she braked into a corner and skidded
on the road coming down and banging her left side quite badly and taking a
chunk of flesh out of her elbow. Are the nominations for the Abdu award closed
?!
