October Club Run
After my exertions on the CompuTrainers
the previous day, (see Gateway to Sport article), I was after a gentle ride.
After waiting for a while to see if anyone else would show (finishing our
coffee!), Gary and I set off around the lanes to the
SE of Ipswich. Gary had to get
back by lunchtime, so the planned route was cut short. We eandered down to
East Bergholt and Flatford Mill before heading back towards Ipswich through
Bentley and Wherstead. On the way back, Gary had found his legs and accelerated
up a couple of hills, leaving me cursing in his wake before catching him up
again.
It was an enjoyable, and well-timed, ride - I was only 2 minutes from home when the heavens opened!

AGM
This years Annual General Meeting will be on Wednesday 22nd November at Trevor's - 15 Surrey Close Framlingham. All members will be notified separately by letter.
Ipswich "Gateway to Sport" - Sat 21/10
Steve very kindly represented us, and local cyclists, at this demonstration of minority sports held at Ipswich YMCA. He even got to meet the Mayor !
There was a good turnout for this event from the cyclists - shame so few of the kids showed up. Tim Butler (Ipswich BC) had borrowed the RTTC East computerised turbo trainers for the day, and these were in almost constant use. Elmy's and Pedal Power had donated some prizes and we had just enough young people taking part to be able to give them all away.

Committee
At the forthcoming AGM Jon Smith will be leaving the club committee after serving for many years of which some were as secretary.
This means the committee is very low on numbers and we are desperate for new blood to come along with their ideas and input. If you are interested in joining the committee then please contact Trevor Figgitt on 01728 723701 or by e-mail at trevor.figgitt@btinternet.com.
CTC Off Road Ride
Mark and Viv Broughton along with Robert Robinson took part in the 25 mile off road ride at Bromeswell. The route used was the traditional one except for a slight diversion towards the end to avoid a swine fever area
Racing Results
Norwich ABC "10" Solos and Tandems -7th Oct
Plomesgate had four solo riders and one tandem for one of the last time trials in the region. The excellent late summer weather of the previous week had given way to persistent rain and wind though which was sure to slow most down. Fastest of our solos was Rob Cotton holing on to his end of season form with a 24:44 just beating Jim Ingram with 24:47. Next was Steve Jones with 25:17 and Hilary fresh from his hols with 26:37. In the tandem event Becky Figgitt was riding with dad Trevor in their first outing in an open event. Although not finishing in their fastest ever time they were only a few seconds slower in 26:04, with a very wet and cold Becky glad it was all over. The solo event was won by Martin Pyne in 20:51 and the tandems by Mick Gambling and Becky Durant in 23:38.
Road Racing
There have been some mixed results at the end of the season. Evert has been our main participant flying the Plomesgate flag to good effect all over the region and beyond. Since his placing in the Ipswich road race back in August (seems like years ago) Evert travelled over to Ugley in Essex for the "Falling Leaves" Road Race and was doing fine in the 134km race until the last lap when the dreaded puncture demon struck again. Up until then Evert had been mixing it with the best 1st, 2nd and 3rd cats that Essex could throw at him.So it should come as no surprise to learn that in the following weeks North Roads CC event over 100km at Kelshall, Evert got in the race winning break and finished 11th. Evert's next race was the rescheduled Anglo Polymers event in Cambridgshire. Three riders were still away at the end of the 103km race and with everyone watching and waiting Evert showed that sprinting is not necessarily just a young mans skill with an excellent 7th in the sprint, 10th overall.
I hope you will join me to congratulate Evert on his first racing season in the UK. He has done the name of Plomesgate CC proud and I hope he has inspired others to better things in 2001. I know he has done what some have wanted to do for a few seasons and that is - beat me.
WELL DONE EVERT !
Roller Racing
Fancy a bash at roller racing then get along to Bungay Sports Centre at 2pm on November 12th. Racing will consist of several events including the Godric Grand Prix 500m Scratch with a £50 top prize plus the Bill Bourne Trophy. Gears are restricted to 100" (26ft 2 ½ ins). Speak to Trevor for more details or contact organiser Geoff Mayne on 01986 893653.
Winter Training Rides
The winter training rides will start on November 26th at 09:00. The format will be similar to previous years starting from Somerfields, Saxmundham and covering around 50 to 60 miles
Essex & Suffolk Border Cycling Combine
Some of you may have heard rumours about the future of this organisation and since the AGM was held after the hillclimb on 5th November we can now report some more definite information.
The Border Combine which has been in existence now for over 50 years will not be promoting any events in 2001 and unless a counter proposal is presented at an Extraordinary General Meeting before August 2001 then the association will be wound up on 31st December 2001. The reasons for the dates is that it allows trophy winners in 2000 to have the trophies for a full year and if the Combine is to continue, the August '01 deadline will allow them time to get some event dates for '02. In the meantime, the committee are to investigate whether there is anything in the constitution or the history of the Combine to dictate what happens to funds, trophies etc. if the Combine is wound up. Distribution of the assets will be discussed at next year's AGM, to be held after the hillclimb, promoted next year by CC Sudbury.
ESBC Annual Dinner and Prize
