Numbers were fairly low for the latest foray into deepest
Essex - it was just me & my dad, Tony. The terrible weather for the rest
of the week plus the fact that it rained all day up in Plomesgate country
no doubt has a lot to answer for!
That said, the weather wasn't actually too bad at all for the ride. I decided
to head fairly and squarely into Essex rather than zigzag along the Colne
& Stour valleys as in previous runs in this area. This had two distinct
advantages
i) we got to see some different scenery
ii) it avoided all the short, sharp hills. I was definitely in favour of
the latter!
It was raining a bit when we set out and got a bit harder for about 10mins
before petering out and staying dry & bright for most of the rest of the
ride. The pace was steady but not too mad as we skirted round the NW of Colchester
through Seven Star Green and Copford. We then went through Eastthorpe to messing
where the lunch stop was planned.
Unfortunately were about 10 minutes too early for the pub and it was still
closed, so we did a few extra miles out through Inworth and Tiptree famous
for its Jam making.
By the time we got back to the pub it was open and we enjoyed getting stuck
into some rather good beer (from local independent brewers Ridleys)
and food. The pub was quite a quaint old place with low ceilings and lots
of small rooms - a bit like a Suffolk country pub, but in Essex! It also had
the claim to fame that it is an ancestral home of the George Bush presidential
(and 'maybe presidential') dynasty in the US. It made a change not too look
too 'odd' in cycling gear as there was also a meeting of a local BMW motorcycle
club at the pub so a little bit of Lycra and a silly helmet went largely unnoticed
with all the leathers and full-face crash
hats!
After a most pleasant lunch we set off for home via Layer Marney, with its
very impressive Tudor towers and Birch, before re-tracing our steps from Copford
Green.
Unfortunately dad made the fateful mistake of saying "well, we seem to
have avoided the worst of the rain" when we were a couple of miles from
home. True to tradition it promptly started pouring! Still, it didn't take
long from there-even so we ended up quite wet!
By the end of the ride we had done just short of 30miles at a pleasant pace
with a most enjoyable lunch stop. Maybe we'll see you next time I run a ride
down this way!

At the AGM it became apparent that if we stuck to our original date of Feb 10th then some of the prize winners could not make it.
Because of this the next date we could use was Saturday March 3rd.
Sorry for any inconvenience but please make a note of the new date.
The Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 22nd November and many thanks to those of you that attended.
The officials for 2001 remain the same:-

I should be getting the membership and racing licence order forms soon. So we will sort out who needs what then, but if you want to let me know in advance then please do so.
We have had this request via our website.
I am a final year osteopathic student and am currently undertaking
research for my dissertation into low back muscle use in cyclists. As you
know, low back pain is a common complaint for many riders, although the causes
have been the subject of some research, the muscles involved have been less
well investigated.
I wondered if any of your members would be interested in filling out my bicycling
questionnaire. The questionnaire address is http://www.bikequest.org.uk/
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
With many thanks
Sarah Bayley
Alternatively I have paper copies which can be completed
and sent in by post.
